| Worthing’s Tom Marsden and Louisa James from Hastings both won Under 17 titles on Day one of the South of England Under 17 and Under 15 championships at Ashford.
The Hastings girl, who is not 14 until July, actually stepped up an age group to win the Under 17 hammer title in a new Sussex record distance of 41.28m with Eastbourne’s Lucie Robichaud throwing a personal best of 36.48m for fifth place.
Ironically Louisa could only take the silver medal in the Under 15 discus throw with a personal best 32.12m but she may well collect another gold in the Under 15 hammer competition today.
In the Under 17 men’s 800 metres Worthing’s Tom Marsden cruised to victory in his heat of the 800 metres and then led from pillar to post to take the title in a personal best of 1:55.85.
There was a silver medal for Horsham’s Joe Kent in the Under 17 High jump where he equalled the winning effort of 2.00m but lost the gold on count back and another silver for club mate Lucy Stickland who cleared 3.30m in the Under 17 pole vault.
This high jump proved a good a good event for Sussex athletes with East Grinstead’s Tom Gardner clearing 1.86m for fourth place and Phil Davies from Lewes placings sixth with 1.85m.
Robert Duke from Worthing, who made a major break through in the County championships, proved it was no fluke but taking fourth place in the Under 15 hammer competition with 45.97m.
There were fifth places in the finals for Under 15 Jordan Auburn (Brighton & Hove) who clocked 12.05 in the 80m hurdles and Eastbourne’s Harry Clarke who clocked 23.76 in the Under 15 200 metres.
Brighton & Hove’s Gabi Harris leapt 4.75m for sixth place in the Under 15 long jump club mate Steffi Motershead threw 31.47m for seventh place in the Under 17 javelin throw, Eastbourne’s Sophie Rodgers was also seventh in the Under 15 100 metres in 12.77 after finishing sixth in the 75m hurdles in 11.9. and Horsham’s Harry Tilsley putt for seventh place in the Under 17 shot putt, one place ahead of club mate Jonathan Gellett who putt 11.14m for eighth place.
