| Brighton & Hove City continued their unbeaten run in the Southern Men’s League this season at Withdean Stadium while in Division three of the British League Crawley made a good start to the season finishing third at Kingston.
The Victoria Park team proved the only real challenge to the home team but at the end of the afternoon they were 13 points adrift totalling 122 to the winning score of 135 while Herts Phoenix, Guildford and Oxford all failed to top the 100 points mark.
There was some fine pole-vaulting with Brighton gaining maximum points and both David Ingram (pictured) and Jack Hanrahan recorded personal bests with 4.21 and 3.60m clearances.
In the second match at Withdean Sam Brown from Lewes, who had set a personal best of 4.12m the previous Sunday at Lewes won his competition with 4.00m after making a couple of good attempts at 4.22m.
It was a good weekend for the vaulters as Crawley’s Nick Buckfield and Adam Walker were also winners at Kingston Nick clearing splendid 5.20m and Adam 4.20m.
Back at Withdean Jake Scanlon, (pictured) who is still in the Under 20 age group, made a right mess of his hammer throwing and took third place in the “B” event allowing club mate William Wilson to take the “A” throw in his first competition of the season with 34.68m.
Jake made amends winning the discus throw with a personal best of 41.83m and despite trouble with his elbow also won the shot putt with 10.62m.
There was another double for the home club in the javelin throw with Michael Steele-Martin throwing 46.20m and Shaun Leigh 43.77m.
On the track the 400 metres proved good pickings with Andrew Adair clocking 50.6. and Richard Clayton 52.0. for victories and these two joined with Ashley Witcomb and Sam Parsons to take the Brighton & Hove team to a convincing 4 x 400m relay victory in 3:27.3. There was another double in the steeplechase with Andrew Donno winning by more than one hundred metres in 9:39.3 and debutante Kevin Mason winning the “B” race in 10:43.1.
Crawley third at Kingston
Competition was much tougher at Kingston but Clayton Turner made a fine season’s debut fining second in the shot with 13.13m and third in the discus throw with 38.85m while Simon Wells put 12.99m in the shot put and finished second in the javelin throw with a personal best of 58.35m.
Leeds won the match at Kingston with 388 points with Kingston/Poly scoring 313 to Crawley’s 290 in third place just four points ahead of Southampton.
The Crawley “B” team were at Withdean and won the Division three match.
Worthing win at Thurrock
There was a good victory for Worthing & District In their Southern League Division Two match at Thurrock where they scored 128 points to Hercules/Wimbledon’s 108, Ryston’s 107 the home team’s 96 and the Met Police’s 93.
The Worthing team notched up 13 victories with Matt Dumigan and Adam Stainsby cleaning up in the 800 metres in 1:59.6 and 2:02.6 respectively while Matt went on to take the 1,500 metres in 4:10.3sec. and Dan Dunscombe and Dean Storry did likewise in the high jump with 1.90m and 1.85m.
League Details
After Saturday’s matches Enfield are still at the top of the table with 15 points, the same as Brighton & Hove but with 417 team points to Brighton & Hove’s 385.
Worthing are in seventh place with 12 points (353.5) and Hastings, who finished fourth in a very close match at Dartford 16th on 7 points (305.5)
Luton won the Dartford match with 116.5 to Dartford and Luton who were both in 111, Hastings 109,5 and the Royal Navy’s 88.
At Worthing on the 28th the three Sussex club’s clash with league leaders Enfield and sixth placed Norwich and that should prove a cracker.
