| ALL TIMES IN THE RACE HAVE BEEN INCREASED BY 20 SECONDS.
Sussex runners had to settle for silver medals in the Centenary celebratory Hastings Marathon on Sunday but what silver medals they were.
The race celebrated the 1908 Hastings Marathon but unlike the 1908 race the runners on Sunday covered the full 26min. 385 yards.
Julian Rendall from the Tonbridge club managed to draw clear of the Hastings duo of Daniel Anderson and Henry Mountcastle to put nearly one minute between himself and his rivals to clock 2:36:51 a faster time than that recorded 100 years ago over a much shorter distance.
Dan pulled well clear of his club mate to record 3:38:07 with Henry running his fastest marathon for at least a decade and probably ever for third place in 2:43:18 and the first veteran across the line.
Chichester’s James Baker, making his marathon debut had led through the first sixteen miles before Dan took up the cudgels. By 21 miles James was going through a bad patch but, never the less, should be well pleased with his fifth placing in 2:50:24 while Arena 80’s Andy Payne clocked 2:54:25 in ninth place and Brighton & Hove’s Shaun Billing 2:55:37 in 11th place.
James Mountford from Hastings finished in a fine 14th place in 2:55:52.
Keith Bossom (Hastings) placed 18th in 2:58:06, Ryan Stewart (Seaford) 25th in 3:02:11 and Andrew Keeley (1066 Triathletes) 29th in 3:03:33.
In the women’s race there was a remarkable run from Brighton & Hove’s Fiona Powell who apart from her efforts in the Hove Park 5km runs has only been racing competitively for a matter of weeks.
Annabelle Stearns from Gravesend was the first woman across the line in 3:04:40 with Fiona little more than a minute behind in 3:05:48 which is the fastest marathon to be run by a Sussex woman this year and 23 minutes faster than she had run in London back in April.
Helen Goddard (Wadhurst) was the second Sussex woman home in seventh place in 3:21:50 while Brighton & Hove’s Amanda Hester and Julia Armstrong finished 15th in 3:32:51 and 23rd in 3:36:28 and Arena 80’s Julie Drake 27th in 3:40:29.
