| Grace Baker from Rye was the highest placed Sussex runner in the South East Schools Inter-county cross-country championships at Reigate on Saturday.
On an afternoon when many of the leading Sussex runners were missing from the battles Baker had a brilliant run to finish third the junior girls race behind two talented Essex girls.
Sophie Riches finished well clear clocking 12:45 but Baker had a great battle with Georgina Tuckfield before losing the runner up position by just one second in 13:02.
Chailey’s Holly English finished, nearly one minute back in 18th place clocking 14:00.
In the senior girls Sion’s Brittany Saville just missed a podium position finishing fourth in 15:10 with Sussex Downs Gina Wilson, who had missed the Sussex Schools event because of illness did well to finish 17th in 16:44.
There was a sixth place in the junior boys race when County Schools champion Ben Collier (Tanbridge House) led the Sussex team home.
The intermediate boys race saw Ardingly’s Will Durkin squeezed into the “Top Ten” in 19:50 while Crowborough’s Ryan Driscoll was not far adrift in 20:01.
Finn McNally (Cardinal Newman) led the senior boys team home placing tenth in 24:03 with Blatchington Mill’s Will Gray placing 12th in 24:18 and BHASVIC’s Kieran Silsby 19th in 24:50.
The intermediate girls event saw Abigail Ashbee-Simmonds first home for Sussex in 14th place clocking 15:41 while Ardingly Beth Kidger placing 20th in 15:56.
Team wise it was not a good afternoon for the Sussex squad with only the junior girls and senior boys teams finishing out of last place, against it must be said some pretty tough competition, to place fourth of the five competing counties.
