| While Tim Bayley was being edged into second place at Sheffield a few thousand miles away in Seattle Chichester’s Charlotte Browning was notching up a fine one mile victory Indoors to smash her personal best and chalk up the third fastest time ever by a Sussex woman.
Browning tucked in behind local favourite Jessica Pixler but stormed past her over the final 200 metres to clock a marvellous 4m 31.4. which was a Stadium and a Florida University record.
At the same meeting Rob Mullett from Lewes became the latest Sussex “Four minute” miler when taking second place, behind Stanford’s Dylan Ferris, clocking 3:59.37 to the winner’s 3:58.90
At Sheffield there were silver and bronze medals for Tim Bayley (Phoenix) and Dannielle Christmas (Crawley) on the second day of the World Indoor Athletics Trials, which were incorporated into the U.K Championships.
Racing the 1,500 metres Bayley, who had flown back from America to compete, was just unable to match the pace of the Bournemouth runner Colin McCourt being squeezed into second place in 4:04.96 to the winner’s 4:04.86.
Christmas clocked 2:05.51 when placing third in the women’s race 800 metres event, which was won by world Championship bronze medallist Jenny Meadows in 2:00.91 while her club mate Hannah Brooks finished seventh in the 1,500 metres final in 4:32.8.
