| Several hundreds of youngsters braved the appalling rain on Thursday to do battle for the Sussex Schools Year 7 and 8 cross country championships at Christ’s Hospital and several of the schools, that had entered chose to stay in the dry.
Such were the conditions that the officials had difficulty extracting the finishing tickets and reading the team envelopes.
Grace Cook from St Richards, who had won the Sussex County Under 13 League race on the previous Saturday romped away with the first race of the afternoon, the Year 7 girls race finishing well clear of Chichester High’s Rosie Ellis and Warden Park’s L.Callaghan while
Windlesham took the team title from Cardinal Newman and Chichester High.
In the Year 7 boys race Falmer’s Stephen Ferroni took the crown from Luke Cooper (Rye) and N.Cheshire (St.Richards) with Windlesham taking their second team title from Dorothy Stringer and Warden Park.
In the Year 8 races India Spoor (Durrington) took the Girls title from Chailey’s Holly English and Esther Lutz-Davies (Varndean) with Hazlewick taking the team title from Windlesham and Dorothy Stringer. In the final event of the afternoon when the ground had been The final event of the afternoon when the course had been well and truly churned into a morass Hurtspierpoint College’s James Oliver, who has been ruling the roost in the Under 13 events in Sussex since December made certain of keeping that record by racing to a fine victory of Ryan Hood (Grove) and Seaford Head’s Jake Alger.
Oliver led his team to a clear team victory over Dorothy Stringer and Chailey.
