| Brighton & Hove City and the Hastings clubs were the only Sussex clubs to complete teams in the English Cross-country championships at Roundhay Park Leeds.
The Brighton & Hove senior men’s team had a good result to finished 24th, out of more than one hundred teams and were the tenth Southern team to finish.
It was Hailsham’s Ben Warren, running for the Harrow club who, led the Sussex challenge finishing an excellent 50th in a finishing field of several thousand runners.
Team manager Matt Bristow led the Brighton & Hove team home in 202nd place with Richard Airey, 230th, Zared Hales 292, James Tomlinson 308th, David Boyce 375th and Howard Bristow 443rd completed the scoring six.
In the U13 girl’s race the Hastings squad of Louis Nash 108th, Katie Garland 148th, Sophie Markwick 170th and Zoe Botting 28th finishing in 29th team spot.
It was Grace Baker from Hastings who has been having a terrific season achieved the highest placing by a Sussex runner finishing a brilliant tenth in the U15 girl’s event while Nicole Taylor from Crowborough and Lewes’ Maddy Smith finished 28th and 67th.
In the U20 women’s race Worthing’s Brittany Saville, whose season seems to get better and better had a sparkling run to finish 19th while Brighton & Hove’s James McCarthy filled 33rd place in the men’s U20 race.
From the Sussex point of view it was the U17 men’s event that was the most successful with six runners claiming a place in the first one hundred runners.
Brighton & Hove’s Will Gray is certainly enjoying a purple patch and following his victory at Lancing the previous weekend he led the Sussex challenge finishing a splendid 26th, nine places ahead of Ross Skelton (Hastings).
Kieran Silsby (Brighton & Hove) scraped inside the “Top fifty” placing 49th while Max Thomas (Hastings) placed 65th, Ryan Driscoll from Crowborough 71st and Kris Everett (Hastings) 78th.
Stacey Clusker from Hastings placed 39th in the U17 women’s race while Brighton & Hove’s Jake Elliott was 44th in the U15 boy’s events, Sian Driscoll from Crowborough 60th in the U13 girl’s event and Hastings’ Ryan Hodd 69th in the U13 Boy’s race.
