Sussex pole-vaulters were well represented at Birmingham and the Lewes girl’s medal came in the U15 event where she cleared 2.80m.
In the same age group Blue Star’s Woodward, who had been let off other sporting activities at Hurstpierpoint College to concentrate on extra pole vault training rewarded his College and Club with a bronze medal clearing 3.10m.
In the U20 high jump East Grinstead’s Tom Gardner soared to a personal best effort of 2.03m the same height as that cleared by the silver medallist and the fourth placed athlete but the East Grinstead took the bronze medal.
Horsham Blue Star’s Joe Kent was rather disappointed with his clearance of 1.97m in this event, which earnt him sixth place
In her first year in the Under 20 age group Wilson sparkled with a clearance of 1.72m, just one centimetre below her best, to finish in fourth spot in the high jump while Blackwell was also a smidgen below a personal best as she cleared 3.10m to finish fourth in the U17 pole vault.
Blue Star athlete Jade Brewster took seventh place in the U15 girl’s pole vault clearing 2.40m, the same height as Olivia Connor (Lewes) who placed eighth.

Steyning miss out on Southern title
The Steyning Athletic Club were unable to repeat the championships winning performance at the National race walking championships the previous weekend in the Southern 10-mile championships, which was held in conjunction with the Surrey Open race at Monks Hill.
It might have been different had Trevor Jones remembered to tick the “Championship Box” on his entry form as he finished second in 85:35 while Richard Emsley placed 6th overall, 4th in the championship in 94:34 one place ahead of Ron Penfold who clocked 99:48.
In the women’s race Joan Lennon continues to show great promise and took second championship place in 96:23, seventh place overall.
