Herne Hill Harrier Keith Newton and Brighton & Hove’s Andrew Donno renewed the rivalry they showed in the recent South of Thames championship on the road at Preston Park on Boxing Day and again it was the younger runner who got the upper hand.
Keith, the County veteran’s champion, shared the lead with Andrew and Brighton & Hove’s Chris Thompson over the first of the four laps but Thompson was the slip away before the half way mark and as they entered the final lap it was Andrew who broke clear and came home a clear winner in 29:14, just four seconds slower than Andy Robinson and Louis Jones clocked when staging dead heat last year.
Conditions were almost perfect this year, ....

It was Crawley’s Surrey athlete Paul Rodgers who was the first of the Sussex club runners to finish placing an excellent second in 34:05 behind Belgrave’s Phil Wicks (32:54) but the best run, as far as Sussex were concerned, came from Brighton & Hove’s Andrew Donno (pictured).
Running his best race since moving into the senior age ....

With several champions not defending their titles it fell to Brighton & Hove’s Keith Newton to be the only 2006 winner to repeat the medicine in the “Brooks” Sussex Master’s Cross-county championships at Denne Park, Horsham on Sunday.
The Over 40 men were the final race and what had been a muddy course before the Over 35 women had opened the afternoon’s racing had been turned into a slippery quagmire in many places.
This however did not seem to deter Keith who established his credentials over the first of the five laps to pull away from Henry Mountcastle from Hastings who has been showing fine form on the roads in recent weeks. He was obviously not very happy in these conditions and ....

It is believe that there were three team victories for the Sussex athletes at the South of England Inter-county Cross country championships at Parliament Hill Fields where wind, rain and mud gave the runners the first real taste of Cross-country conditions this season.
The conditions seem to make access to results difficult and full details are not to hand early Sunday morning.
One this is certain the Under 23 mens team won a nail biting battle with Hampshire for the team title.
Led home by the very much in form Todd Leckie from Hailsham both teams finished with 44 points but Sussex closed their scoring four in first.
Todd had another fine run finishing in sixth place in 33:53 while Brighton & Hove’s Andrew ....

A trio of Sussex athletes were in good form in the recent Oxford and Cambridge “Freshers Match” at the Wilberforce Road track.
In all three cases the athletes had had a disjointed track season and had not been at their best. They were however more than a match for the other newcomers to the “Oxbridge” Universities.
East Grinstead’s Jo Lister after a second place in the 200m in 28.8 was an impressive winner of the 400m in 61.9.
Brighton & Hove’s Flo Ray, whose track season was disrupted by injury, completed an impressive middle distance double taking the 800m in 2:26.9 and the 1,500m in 5:02.3 while Club mate Josh Mouland, who had spent last winter touring the world and neglecting his training, ....

Chichester’s James Baker, not satisfied with his victory in the Sussex Cross country League last weekend, pitched up at Gosport the following day to defend his Gosport Half-marathon title.
He was however unable to contain Winchester’s Tony Lambert who set a new course record of 65:36, a full three minutes ahead of James who clocked 68:57, just seven seconds slower than last year’s winning time.
Club mate David Dorning finished second in the Over 50 age group in 81:18.

It was virtually all change for the second of this season’s “Brooks” Sussex Cross-country League races at Bexhill Down.
Four weeks on from the battles of Goodwood just Hastings athletes, and they should know a bit about battles, Charlie Joslin Allen (Under 13) and Adam Clarke (Under 15) repeated their wins over the Downs at Goodwood.
The going was mainly firm and fast. There were areas of mud in the wooded areas and a few puddles along the long straight but the runners, who have not really got into the idea of cross country running this season, meticulously avoided these areas whenever they could.
It was a good day for Tradesmen in the senior races as a Coleman, Sophie of that ilk, ....
