Sussex County 800-metre and English and Sussex Schools 1,500-metre champion Charlie Grice successfully negotiated his way into the final of the 1,000 metres at the Olympic Youth championships in Singapore.
The Phoenix athlete had been drawn in the easier of the two heats and controlled the race very much as he does at home and although he was pushed down the home straight he strode across the finishing line one metre clear of his nearest rival in 2:24.74s,less than a fifth of a second slower than his personal best.
It was back in May in Moscow that Grice finished second in the European group of the Youth Olympics when he was narrowly beaten by the Irish athlete Mark English.

The Sussex senior teams turned in probably their best ever results in the South East Inter-county match when placing second in the mens match, fourth in the women’s match and third place overall.
The wind at Ashford made life pretty difficult for many of the athletes but the Sussex athletes battled well team manager Chris Minn had worked hard to produce a full team despite the absence of many of the leading Sussex athletes.
In the mens match it was Essex who came out on top with 411.5 points with Sussex scoring 356.5, and Kent third with 327 points while in the women’s match Kent won with 387.5 to 363 for Middlesex, 349 for Essex and 323.5 for Sussex in fourth ....

Despite the problems that team manager Roland Garrad had with holidays and injuries the Sussex Under 17 team did probably better than expected in the South of England Inter-county match at Stevenage.
It is always tough for Sussex as they are surrounded by the “Super Five”, Surrey, Hampshire, Kent, Essex and Middlesex so sixth place is probably their expected position in these South East Inter-county matches and they achieved this in both the Boys and girls matches and actually finished ahead of Hampshire on the overall score, which is quite an achievement.
Apart from a few “B” winners Robert Duke was the only “A” winner, making it a good weekend for the Duke family from Worthing.
Ironically it was not his number one ....

There was a nailbiting second team spot for Crawley in Senior Division one of the Southern Women’s League at Bedford while in Division two Worthing notched up their best result of the season winning their Division two match handsomely at Kingsmeadow.
In Division one of the Senior/U15 League there was another second placing behind Thames Valley for Haywards Heath at West London.
At Kingsmeadow it was the exploits of Laura and Mum Allison and Jo Davison who really did the damage in the field events.
Laura notched up four victories during the afternoon winning the high jump at 1.45m, the long jump with 4.92m the shot putt with 19.52m and the “B” hammer throw with 43.16m,
Allison won the pole vault clearing 2.60m, ....

Looking back at last month’s results from the England Schools championships at Birmingham the efforts of this year’s team were the best by Sussex for at least thirteen years.
Four athletes won gold medals at Birmingham, Adelle Tracey the U18 800 metres, Elise Lovell the U19 long jump, Charlie Grice the U17 1,500 metres and the U15 relay team.
We have to go back to 1997 for the last time that Sussex picked up four gold medals at these championships.
Then Andrew Robinson won the 2km steeplechase, Simon Eyre the U17 800 metres, Claire Smithson the U15 discus and Sam Redd the U15 javelin.
Robinson is the only athlete who is still, albeit occasionally, seen on the Sussex athletics scene.
We have to go back ....

The final Southern Men’s League Division one matches for 2010 saw the Brighton & Hove City team close in on third place Highgate Harriers but their second place at Reading behind the Newbury team means that they will finish the season in fourth place.
In a tight match Newbury totalled 138 points to the Sussex team’s 133 points.
Tom French chalked up an impressive long/triple jump double clearing 6.80m/13.58m while David Ingram soared over 4.25m to win the pole vault with Joe Pybus, who seemed to be popping up all over the place clearing 3.20m to take the “B” vault.
Chris Thomson, no not that one, was inspired by his namesake and romped clear of the opposition finishing more than half a lap ....

The Brighton & Hove Junior team are Itchen League champions for the fourth successive year after all.
Following last Sunday’s nailbiter at Andover when Southampton were adjudged the winners by just four points the calculations have been checked, points for officials allocated and it was Brighton & Hove who won the match by a couple of points.
This means that the final League placings have both Brighton & Hove and Southampton on 30 points for the season but Brighton & Hove City take the title as they have amassed more total points.
Both teams however are invited to the take part in the Southern Promotion match for a place in the Premier League at Copthall on August 29th.
